Title: Director, Systems Engineering
Job Description:
The Director of Systems Engineering is responsible for developing optimized solutions to the overall systems architecture and design for new CPV systems, including the Skyline modules, 1-axis trackers and controllers, mounting/foundation equipment, inverters, grid-connect gear, system monitoring/controls/communications, field design (spacing, alignment methodologies), weather stations, operations and maintenance solutions. The Systems Engineering Director works independently and as a team member to ensure optimization of the overall systems costs and risks by working collaboratively with the other engineering leads for the components and subsystems. Optimization of the system costs will be achieved by developing analytical cost & performance modeling tools and working with module design team, tracker design team, and external suppliers/partners of BOS (balance of system) equipment on the right design and cost tradeoffs in these areas. Proper identification and documentation of the interfaces required between the relevant design elements will be required to enable independent, yet tightly coupled, design efforts to proceed in parallel towards the optimized overall system design.
We seek an individual who will provide an entrepreneurial focus to helping lead overall system solutions and architecture directions. A successful candidate will be expected to interact with a wide variety of groups both within Skyline and externally. Examples of these interactions include working closely with operations to build efficient logistical systems, internally driving compliance with national/regional codes and certification requirements, and working with channel partners for product installation and sales.
The Systems Engineering Director will be responsible for architecture of the overall solution. Experience managing complex and multi-disciplinary products is required. Prior systems or product design management experience is required. Direct management of hardware systems products in the solar PV market is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Develop optimized overall system design including the modules, trackers and controllers, mounting/foundation equipment, inverters, and other subsystems.
- Develop analytical cost & performance modeling tools.
- Ensure all component and subsystem designs are being developed with proper interfaces for smooth integration.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Core Level Qualifications:
- M.S. in engineering or equivalent (Ph.D. preferred)
- 2+ years experience in the solar industry desired
- 5+ years in the role of Engineering Manager or Director required
- Strong technical orientation
- Excellent leadership, teamwork & persuasion skills
- Experience managing developing complex systems designs
Technical Skills: The candidate must have some level of proficiency in:
- Solar PV power systems, including: module technologies; installation, operations and maintenance processes
- Power generation/distribution networks and grid-tied distributed generation requirements
- Remote telemetry and communications technologies
Non-Technical Skills
- Excellent written and verbal skills are essential
- Ability to document subsystems requirements via interface requirements documents
- Teamwork – the ability to work both with teams, and across multiple teams of members without reporting responsibility to the position
- Ability to make decisions independently and/or as part of team
- Entrepreneurial mindset
